His Excellency, President of the Republic of South Sudan
Comrade Salva Kiir Mayardit
Presidential Palace – Juba
Subject: Urgent Humanitarian Appeal to Deliver Food and Medicine to the Nuba Mountains (Dilling and Kadugli)
Your Excellency,
Greetings of solidarity, shared struggle, and human dignity,
I write to you today as one of the sons of a land you know well — the Nuba Mountains — and as a former officer in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and former official spokesperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North (SPLM-North). I address you not only as a citizen deeply rooted in this land, but also as a comrade in a shared history of struggle — a history written in blood, sacrifice, and unshakable belief in freedom and justice.
Your Excellency,
Today, the Nuba Mountains — particularly the cities of Dilling and Kadugli — are facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in their history. The people are suffering from severe hunger, extreme shortages of medicine, and the total collapse of healthcare services. Roads are blocked, markets are empty, clinics have no supplies, and the basic necessities of life have disappeared. The tragedy is no longer on the horizon — it is already here, unfolding silently but painfully.
The time left before this becomes a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe is no more than one week. We are witnessing the brink of mass death due to hunger, disease, and thirst. Every passing hour means more lives lost — especially among children, pregnant women, the elderly, and the sick.
Your Excellency,
I am fully aware that people may have differing views on the war in Sudan. But no citizen chooses to be a victim. No mother chooses to watch her child starve to death. No father chooses to carry his sick son on his back for hours, only to find an empty hospital. In times like these, humanity must rise above politics. Compassion must prevail over calculation.
That is why I urgently appeal to you — as a leader, as a liberator, and as someone who knows our history — to take immediate humanitarian action to facilitate safe humanitarian corridors and coordinate with international organizations — including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), World Health Organization (WHO), and World Food Programme (WFP) — to deliver emergency food and medical aid to our people in the Nuba Mountains, particularly in Dilling and Kadugli.
Your Excellency,
You more than anyone know the immense sacrifices made by the people of the Nuba Mountains during the long years of struggle for South Sudan’s liberation. They fought and died alongside you in the same trenches — in Fajja, Wad Kona, near Yei, in Maridi, Raja and beyond. They gave their lives with full conviction in the justice of our common cause.
You surely remember your historic visit to the Nuba Mountains in 2004, accompanied by the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior. That visit was a symbol of solidarity and recognition of the Nuba people’s role in the national liberation movement. The people of the Nuba Mountains welcomed you with open arms and hearts — and to this day, they remain committed to that legacy, despite the hardship and pain they now endure.
I know — and the world knows — that with a single step, you can save the lives of hundreds of thousands of children, women, and innocent civilians. It does not require lengthy conferences or statements — only a courageous decision and a humane initiative that will reaffirm the Republic of South Sudan’s moral leadership and historic loyalty to those who once stood shoulder to shoulder with it in battle.
Your Excellency,
History does not remember the silent in times of crisis. It remembers those who act — those who refuse to look away. I remain confident that you will not turn your back on the people of the Nuba Mountains. You know who they are. You know what they have done. And you know what they still represent in the shared national conscience between our peoples.
With deep respect and sincere hope,
Your brother,
Mubarak Ardol
