This is a thoughtful look at the role of Islamists in Sudan’s civil war and the (uncomfortable) alliance they have with the SAF. As an analyst, there is no more contested issue in Sudan than the role Islamists play and what they intend to achieve. I tend to believe that too much power is attributed to them, but I understand and respect the national trauma that they have caused. That their future role is now being used to justify and defend the deadly interventions of outside actors makes resolving the question of their role all the more important. Ironically, everyone I speak to from Washington, to Port Sudan, to Abu Dhabi seem to agree that they should have no future role in the country has not been enough to create a consensus on ending the war.
