Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Revolutionary Democratic Current
Statement on the Revolutionary Current’s Memorandum to the Leadership of Sumoud
The leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Revolutionary Democratic Current sent a memorandum to the president of the Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces – Sumoud, Dr. Abdullah Hamdok, and the members of the alliance’s leadership.
Some parties opposing the revolution and the unity of the civil democratic forces have attempted to use this to serve their own purposes of spreading confusion and discord. These forces are of no concern to us. What really matters to us is the public opinion in favour of completing the revolution and building the state-nation, as well as the forces of the anti-war front and those who support the Sumoud Alliance.
We would like to clarify the contents of our memorandum in a concise manner, and we are committed to publishing it later after it has been discussed within the Samoud organs.
This memorandum is not our first, and contributing to the reform of alliances is a long-standing tradition that we must preserve, especially in light of the fragmentation of society, the collapse of the state, and the militarisation of civil space, taking into account that this war was waged to liquidate the Sudanese revolution and the traditions of democratic civil action and its independence. The most important points in our memorandum are as follows:
1- We have been involved in attempts to resolve the organisational crisis that the alliance has been experiencing since its inception. From our long experience of alliances, it is clear that the organisational crisis is essentially a political crisis related to the vision and position of the warring parties, the complexities of the war, and the nature of the alliance. Is it an organic alliance to accomplish strategic tasks or a mechanism for political bargaining? All these issues require answers, and the war has presented civil forces with difficult choices.
2- It is possible and necessary to emerge from the crisis by adopting a vision for building an organic alliance that achieves the independence of civil forces and links them to democratic civil action, and mobilising the broadest front for regional and international solidarity and alignment with the interests of those affected, focusing on the humanitarian disaster and the protection of civilians as an irreplaceable gateway to an integrated package that includes the political process. Placing the political process as a gateway instead of the humanitarian disaster and the protection of civilians prolongs the suffering of civilians and does not stop the war.
3- The alliances of democratic civil forces that emerged after the December revolution did not adequately address issues of specialisation, collective participation in decision-making, and consideration of political, geographical, and gender diversity.
4- All indications suggest that focusing on the political process in isolation from the interests of those affected and placing the responsibility for resolving the humanitarian disaster and protecting civilians on the regional and international community will lead to fragile solutions based on power sharing. The experiences around us in the region and at the international level need to be evaluated, and our standing repositioned based on mobilising the forces of the revolution and the anti-war front in an organic alliance.
5- The revolutionary current has decided to participate in further dialogue within the Sumoud leadership body to achieve the necessary reforms and support all efforts aimed at resolving the humanitarian disaster, protecting civilians, and building the civil front. We do not intend to participate in the current political process, including the round table and the executive bodies of Sumoud.
Finally, we recognise the importance of Sumoud, and at the same time, we recognise the importance of developing and reforming it and reaching the broadest anti-war front. The views we have expressed in our memorandum are the same views we have put forward within the alliance, and we feel no embarrassment in presenting them to the public. Indeed, the public has a right to know at the appropriate time.
